Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, the highly anticipated follow-up to Final Fantasy 7: Remake, has been a topic of discussion among analysts and fans regarding its sales performance. Recent reports have indicated that the game may not be selling as well as publisher Square Enix had hoped, despite receiving critical acclaim. However, without specific sales figures, it is challenging to determine the exact sales performance of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.
In the monthly video game consumer spending report by Circana for March, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth was listed as the fourth best-selling game of the year so far in the U.S. market based on dollar sales. While this is a respectable position, it is worth noting that it is currently the 14th best-selling Final Fantasy game of all time. However, considering that Rebirth has only been on the market for two months on a single platform compared to other Final Fantasy titles with multiple years and platforms, some leniency can be given in terms of sales figures.
When analyzing the U.S. sales of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella revealed that sales are down by a double-digit percentage compared to both Final Fantasy 7: Remake and Final Fantasy 16 during the same period. Piscatella noted that the launch timing and anticipation surrounding Remake played a significant role in its success, and described Rebirth’s performance as “not amazing, but also nowhere near terrible.” This assessment aligns with other industry experts and U.K. sales numbers.
However, it remains uncertain whether this level of performance will meet Square Enix’s expectations. The publisher has already announced significant losses due to canceled games in the last fiscal year, and it is unclear how this will impact the future of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, if at all. Additionally, the comparison between Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and Dragon’s Dogma 2 sales highlights a stark difference in performance, with Dragon’s Dogma 2 surpassing the combined sales of its predecessors within a month. However, it should be noted that Dragon’s Dogma 2 released on multiple platforms, while Rebirth is exclusive to the PS5.
In terms of other notable sales data, Helldivers 2 continues to be the best-selling game of the year so far and Dragon’s Dogma 2 claimed the top spot for March. Horizon 2: Forbidden West saw a significant jump in sales, likely due to its PC launch. Overall, video game sales were up 4% year-over-year, driven by mobile content, while hardware sales experienced a 32% drop.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it is important to remember that sales figures can vary based on various factors, including platform exclusivity and market trends. While Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth may not be reaching the same heights as its predecessor, it still remains a popular title among fans. Only time will tell how its performance will shape the future of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.
