Stellar Blade, the action-packed third-person game developed by Shift Up, emerged as the best-selling video game in the United States for the month of April 2024. According to Mat Piscatella, the executive director of video games at Circana, Stellar Blade was the only new release in April to secure a spot among the top 20 best-selling premium video games. It outperformed other new releases such as Sand Land and Another Crab’s Treasure. Other notable games that made it to the top 20 include Helldivers 2, Fallout 4, and Tekken 8.
While Stellar Blade’s achievement of topping the sales charts is commendable, Piscatella also highlighted an interesting fact about its sales performance. It had the lowest sales figures for a leading game in April since 2012 when Prototype 2, the action-adventure game by Radical Entertainment, claimed the number one position.
In addition to analyzing the April 2024 report, Piscatella shared insights on the sales trends of gaming consoles. He noted on Twitter that PlayStation 5 (PS5) sales were surpassing those of PlayStation 4 (PS4) at a similar point in their lifecycles. However, he speculated that 2023 might have been the peak year for PS5 sales in the United States. On the other hand, Xbox Series X/S consoles were trailing behind Xbox One by 13%, and both systems were slightly behind Xbox 360 in terms of U.S. sales.
These observations come amidst Sony’s revelation that half of PlayStation players have yet to upgrade from PS4 to PS5. Despite this, both Sony and Microsoft are preparing for new hardware releases. Rumors have circulated about Sony’s rumored PS5 Pro, with leaked hardware specifications surfacing online. Meanwhile, Microsoft has already announced that it is working on a next-generation gaming console, which promises to be a significant leap in terms of technical advancements. Leaks from last year also hinted at mid-cycle refreshes for the Xbox Series X and S in 2024.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these hardware developments and sales trends shape the future of gaming. The success of games like Stellar Blade demonstrates the demand for immersive experiences, while the competition between Sony and Microsoft fuels innovation in the console market.
