Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Breaks Crucial Mod, but Players Have Found Workarounds

Bethesda’s highly anticipated next-gen update for Fallout 4 has finally arrived, but unfortunately, it has broken one of the game’s most crucial mods. The Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE), a foundational modding resource that extends scripting capabilities, has been impacted by the update. Many mods rely on F4SE to function properly, making modding Fallout 4 significantly more complicated without it.

In a post on the F4SE Nexus Mods page, developer ianpatt explained that the Fallout 4 update (1.10.980 and later) has broken F4SE and other native code mods, similar to the impact of Skyrim’s “Anniversary Edition” patch. While ianpatt is working on an update to address the issue, there is currently no timeline for its availability, nor any guarantees regarding potential technical obstacles. The developer advised against contacting them with questions about the update.

The Fallout 4 next-gen update, released more than eight years after the game’s initial launch, introduces performance improvements, Creation Club content, and more. Despite the excitement surrounding the update, players have already discovered workarounds to prevent it from interfering with their modding experience. The comments section on the F4SE Nexus Mods page contains a variety of walkthroughs that guide users on turning off auto-updates and rolling back the new update. These resources provide options for players who were unable to prevent the update from being installed.

However, reverting the update or avoiding it altogether means players will have to forgo the benefits of the next-gen enhancements and content introduced in the update. While workarounds exist, players may still face challenges in enjoying the full Fallout 4 experience with mods until updates are released to address the compatibility issues.

It’s not just the F4SE mod that has been affected by the Fallout 4 next-gen update. The highly popular Fallout London mod, which adds new story elements and locations, was originally scheduled to release earlier this week. However, due to the update, the team behind Fallout London has been forced to postpone its project. No new release date has been announced as the team works to adapt to the changes introduced by Bethesda.

Despite the challenges posed by the update, Fallout 4 remains a beloved game, and players have found ways to work around the issues caused by the next-gen update. The Fallout community continues to find solutions, and mod updates are expected to roll out over time to address the compatibility problems.
