In an exciting development for Fortnite fans in the European Union (EU), Epic Games has announced that the iPad version of the popular battle royale game will be making a comeback. This news comes following a recent announcement by the European Commission requiring Apple to ensure that iPadOS complies with the same rules as iOS under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Epic Games took to Twitter to share the news, stating that EU players who have been missing out on playing Fortnite on their iPads will soon be able to enjoy the game once again. This move is part of Epic’s broader efforts to bring back the iOS version of Fortnite to the EU App Store and launch the Epic Games Store on Android and iOS in the region.
The ultimate goal for Epic Games, as expressed by CEO Tim Sweeney, is to establish the Epic Games Store as the leading multi-platform software store, offering competitive payment options, low fees, and exclusive games like Fortnite.
During the recent State of Unreal event, Epic Games provided further details on the mobile version of the Epic Games Store. Mobile developers utilizing the third-party storefront will benefit from the same fair terms as the main Epic Games Store, including an 88/12 revenue share and the ability to retain 100% of the revenue earned through in-app purchases made via their own payment systems.
Fortnite was removed from mobile devices nearly four years ago after Epic introduced a direct-pay system within the game, resulting in cheaper V-Bucks for players. However, this move violated the app store policies of Apple and Google, leading to the removal of Fortnite from their respective digital storefronts. Epic subsequently filed lawsuits against both companies, with ongoing legal proceedings.
In the absence of Fortnite on mobile devices, players without a Nintendo Switch or a portable gaming PC like the Steam Deck resorted to streaming the game via Xbox Cloud Gaming or Nvidia GeForce Now. While Epic has not provided a specific release date for Fortnite’s return to mobile, the news of its imminent comeback on iPads within the EU is undoubtedly exciting for fans eagerly awaiting its return.
Stay tuned for further updates on Fortnite’s availability on mobile platforms as Epic Games continues to navigate the legal landscape and work towards bringing the game back to its dedicated player base.
