Hasbro is setting its sights on the future of gaming with an ambitious long-term strategy that includes investing over $1 billion in its internal studios. In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, Wizards of the Coast head of game studios and publishing, Dan Ayoub, revealed that video games are a crucial part of Hasbro’s strategy for the next 100 years.
Ayoub emphasized the importance of delivering top-quality, authentic games that can be built upon. While Hasbro’s IP licensing strategy has been successful, earning the company millions with hits like Baldur’s Gate 3, the company is now investing heavily in its internal game development studios to handle its IPs and create new ones.
Hasbro’s current AAA studios include Atomic Arcade, working on a G.I. Joe Snake Eyes game, and Invoke Studios, developing a game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Skeleton Key and Archetype Entertainment round out the quartet, with the latter working on a new IP called Exodus.
The $1 billion investment in these studios is part of a deliberate plan that extends beyond game development. Ayoub highlighted the opportunity to create new IPs through video games and leverage the scale of Hasbro to explore other avenues. This approach aligns with Hasbro’s emphasis on quality and authenticity.
Ayoub also acknowledged the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, noting that players appreciate well-executed Dungeons & Dragons games. This positive response has inspired Hasbro to continue delivering quality experiences, while also exploring new ways to revitalize franchises like G.I. Joe.
While Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, has moved on from the D&D setting, Hasbro is actively seeking new partners to shape the future of the franchise. Ayoub highlighted the vast number of IPs under Hasbro’s umbrella and assured fans that games developed by internal studios will not be rushed, emphasizing the importance of allowing projects to fully develop.
Hasbro’s recent layoffs, which affected over 1,000 staff members, were part of the company’s efforts to modernize and streamline operations. The goal is to focus on fewer, bigger brands and position Hasbro for future growth.
With a substantial investment in internal game development studios, Hasbro is poised to secure its position in the gaming industry and deliver high-quality experiences to players. The company’s commitment to authenticity and its vast array of IPs suggest exciting times ahead for gamers and fans of Hasbro’s properties.
