Nintendo is expecting its popular console, the Switch, to surpass the Nintendo DS and become the company’s best-selling platform. In the coming financial year, Nintendo forecasts that the Switch will sell an additional 13.5 million units, bringing its total sales to 141.32 million units.
The financial results, released today, also mentioned the possibility of a Switch 2 for the first time. Alongside this, Nintendo predicts that the sales of the original Switch will reach 154.82 million units, surpassing the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS.
To put this achievement into perspective, the Nintendo DS sold a total of 154.02 million units during its sales run. The best-selling video game platform of all time, the PlayStation 2, sold 160 million units.
The success of the Switch can be attributed to its unique hybrid design, which allows players to enjoy games both on-the-go and on a television screen. Its extensive library of games, including hits like “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” and “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” has also contributed to its popularity.
Nintendo’s forecast for the Switch’s continued success reflects its confidence in the platform’s ability to attract new players and retain a dedicated fanbase. As the Switch continues to dominate the console market, Nintendo is poised to further solidify its position as a leading player in the gaming industry.
