Fallout 4 PS Plus Owners Currently Cannot Get the Next-Gen Update for Free
Reports have surfaced indicating that PlayStation Plus subscribers who own Fallout 4 may not be able to download the next-gen update for free. It appears that the next-gen update for Fallout 4 is only available for free to those who own the game outright, rather than through the PS Plus subscription service. It is unclear at this time whether this is an intentional decision by Bethesda or a bug. IGN has reached out to Bethesda for comment on the matter.
In contrast, Xbox Game Pass subscribers have access to the native Xbox Series X and S version of Fallout 4 as part of their subscription. This may be attributed to the fact that Fallout developer Bethesda, through its parent company ZeniMax, is now owned by Microsoft, the maker of Xbox.
While PS Plus subscribers will still receive a significant update for the PlayStation 4 version of Fallout 4, which includes new content and bug fixes, it appears that there is currently no way for them to access the native PS5 version without purchasing it separately. Bethesda’s representative addressed the confusion in the company’s Discord server, stating, “PS5 Upgrade should be available for you if you OWN Fallout 4 on the PSN account. Still looking into this for the PS+ users!”
PS Plus subscribers have expressed disappointment over the situation and have criticized Bethesda for not flagging this issue ahead of the highly anticipated launch of the Fallout 4 next-gen update. Players have taken to social media to voice their concerns, sharing screenshots showing that they are being prompted to purchase the PS5 version of the game despite already owning it through PS Plus.
The next-gen update for Fallout 4 includes native applications for the consoles, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. This allows the game to be played at up to 60 frames per second and with increased resolution.
Additionally, Fallout 4 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will receive a free update with stability improvements, login and quest fixes. PC players will also receive a free update that adds widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, along with fixes to the Creation Kit and various quest updates. Players with PC versions of Fallout 4 on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and GOG will receive stability, mod, and bug fixes. Furthermore, Fallout 4 will be available for purchase on the Epic Games Store, and will be Steam Deck verified.
As the situation regarding the next-gen update for Fallout 4 continues to unfold, players are advised to stay tuned for further updates and announcements from Bethesda. The company’s response on Discord indicates that they are actively investigating the issue and working to provide a resolution for PS Plus subscribers.
