Sony has removed a controversial interview with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann from its website after it was pointed out that there were “several significant errors and inaccuracies” in the published content. The interview, which took place during a corporate strategy meeting, included quotes attributed to Druckmann discussing various topics, including artificial intelligence (AI) and the studio’s next game.
After the interview was published, Druckmann took to social media to clarify that his words had been misrepresented and lost in translation. He stated that the “words, context, and intent were unfortunately lost” in the published interview. In a subsequent tweet, Druckmann shared the full, unedited response to the final question about the future game, emphasizing his excitement for the project but clarifying that he did not say it could “redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”
Druckmann’s public statement caught the attention of many, as it is uncommon for developers to call out their own corporate entities. However, given the misrepresentation in the interview, it was seen as an appropriate response. In response to the controversy and Druckmann’s concerns, Sony issued an apology to the Naughty Dog director, acknowledging the errors and inaccuracies in the interview. Sony also expressed regret for any negative impact the interview may have had on Druckmann and his team.
Sony, in coordination with Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), has since removed the interview from its website. The incident highlights the importance of accurate reporting and the need for clear communication between developers and publishers. Misrepresentation of statements can lead to confusion and controversy, which can negatively impact both the individuals involved and the perception of the studio.
Naughty Dog confirmed earlier this year that it is working on a new project, which will be its first release since 2020’s The Last of Us: Part II. The studio also announced the cancellation of its multiplayer game based on The Last of Us and stated its focus on single-player experiences moving forward.
As of now, details about Naughty Dog’s upcoming game and its release date remain undisclosed. Fans will have to wait for further updates from the studio to learn more about the highly anticipated project.
