Starfield players can rejoice as the game’s May update brings a highly requested feature: the ability to turn off Bethesda’s trademark NPC zoom. The update, currently available in beta form on Steam, introduces a range of new features, including detailed maps and ship interior customization. However, one change that has been receiving praise is the option to toggle off the default dialogue camera.
Bethesda games are known for their distinctive camera technique that zooms in on an NPC’s face during dialogues. This often leads to comical and sometimes unsettling moments where characters stare directly at the player. While Fallout 4 deviated from this style by keeping the camera pulled back during conversations, Starfield initially returned to the traditional Bethesda NPC zoom.
Modders took matters into their own hands by creating modifications that disabled the dialogue camera, allowing players to experience conversations from a third-person perspective. Responding to the community’s feedback, the official Starfield update now includes the option to toggle off the dialogue camera, providing players with the freedom to watch scenes unfold from their chosen perspective.
The reception to this toggle feature has been overwhelmingly positive, along with the introduction of detailed maps. While the Starfield update will be available to all players on May 15, the quality-of-life improvements have already enticed players back into the captivating world of the space game.
In addition to the NPC zoom toggle, the May update also introduces a 60fps option for Starfield on Xbox Series X, although it is not available for Xbox Series S. Players can expect further expansions, such as the highly anticipated Shattered Space, set to release in the fall, potentially in September. The addition of land vehicles is also in the pipeline, ensuring that Starfield continues to evolve and offer new experiences.
In a recent interview, Todd Howard, Bethesda’s development chief, acknowledged the mixed reception to Starfield. He suggested that some of the criticism may stem from the game being different from Bethesda’s popular titles like Fallout and Skyrim. With ongoing updates and player feedback, Bethesda aims to shape Starfield into a unique and captivating experience.
As players eagerly await the official release of the May update, the positive response to the toggle feature and other improvements showcases Bethesda’s dedication to enhancing the player experience. Starfield continues to evolve, offering players a vast and immersive space adventure.
