You Probably Don’t Have to Worry About Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s Incredibly Complicated Cut Content
Fans of Assassin’s Creed Mirage can breathe a sigh of relief as Ubisoft has reassured players that the allegedly cut ending of the game, which would have added another layer of complexity to the series’ already intricate meta story, is probably nothing to worry about. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, Mirage art director Jean-Luc Sala addressed a fan’s concerns about cut content found through a datamine and its impact on the larger Assassin’s Creed story.
Sala’s response was straightforward yet reassuring. He stated, “All we can say is that what’s not in your playthrough does not exist.” This suggests that the cut content was removed from the game for a reason and therefore holds no bearing on the official Assassin’s Creed stories that have been released. However, Sala added a winking emoji to his response, perhaps intentionally leaving fans on edge with a hint of mystery.
The cut content was believed to be a tease for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, an upcoming entry with a spooky aesthetic that appears to be connected to witchcraft. While Mirage, like other games in the franchise, features minor connections to the modern-day meta story, this cut tease hinted at a distant future setting for the first time. Players could overhear a conversation between two Animus Operators, referencing the 21st century as “ancient history.”
What made the cutscene even more intriguing and slightly eerie was the depiction of Mirage protagonist Basim’s eagle flying from the game’s regular map into the desert toward a technological tower of sorts. This suggested that the game might not be exclusively set in 9th century Baghdad, as initially believed. However, Sala’s statement makes it clear that this content does not exist within the final game, leaving fans to wonder if Assassin’s Creed will explore that direction in the future.
While the cut content may not be part of the official Assassin’s Creed Mirage experience, there are still opportunities for Ubisoft to take the franchise in different directions. Two confirmed upcoming entries, Assassin’s Creed Hexe and Assassin’s Creed Red set in feudal Japan, are already in development under the Assassin’s Creed Infinity umbrella, a new platform serving as a series hub. Details about these projects are scarce, but one Ubisoft employee listed Assassin’s Creed Red as a game slated for release in 2024.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage, released on October 5, 2023, marked a return to the series’ roots with slower-paced, stealth-based gameplay, departing from the role-playing game elements of the recent Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla trilogy. In our review, IGN rated Assassin’s Creed Mirage 8/10 and praised its back-to-basics approach, stating that it successfully rekindled the stealthy style that defined the series.
While the cut content may have piqued fans’ curiosity, it is reassuring to know that Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s main storyline remains intact. With future entries like Hexe and Red on the horizon, players can look forward to new and exciting directions for the franchise.
